Warming Golden Energy Bites

These energy bites are the perfect quick little snack for those first few weeks of being a new mama when your hunger is at an all time high. While I was pregnant with my son just over 2 years ago (and again with my daughter this year) I made a couple batches of these and stored them in the freezer in preparation for postpartum, and boy did they ever come in handy!

I was ravenous during those middle of the night breastfeeding sessions and these little bites were just what I needed.

On top of being a great midnight snack (or any time of day snack), they also contain warming spices that are super supportive of the postpartum period. Turmeric, a well known spice for its anti-inflammatory properties, also acts as a gentle uterotonic, helping to return the uterus back to pre-pregnancy size. Ginger is a wonderful spice that helps improve digestion, something us mamas definitely need some help with while all of our organs shift back into place after birth. On top of that, ginger also helps support lactation. Lastly, cinnamon and cardamom not only add a delicious flavour but also help warm the body, and warming foods and spices are especially important to consume in the postpartum period to help increase circulation and blood flow, as well as to help restore energy.

I hope you enjoy these little golden gems as much as I do!

Warming Golden Energy Bites

— makes approx. 25 bites —

Ingredients

  • 1 cup raw walnut halves
  • 1 1/2 cups medjool dates, pitted (approx. 15 medium dates)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oat flakes
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom

Method

  • Place all of the ingredients in a large food processor fitted with the "S" blade and process for about 1 minute or until the mixture is crumbly but sticks together when pressed between your fingers.
  • Using either your hands or a spoon, scoop out about 1 tablespoon of the mixture and roll it between your hands to form into a ball. Repeat until all of the mixture has been rolled.
  • Place all of the balls in a glass airtight container and place in the freezer to set for about 30 minutes before eating.
  • Store the remaining balls in the freezer for up to 3 months. You can also store these in the fridge, although they won't keep as long, but I personally prefer the texture when they are kept in the freezer.
